About Kyustendil

Roman ruins in Kyustendil

Roman History
Pautalia – the Roman name of Kyustendil – was founded early in the 2nd century. It was located on an important route through the Balkans and became the administrative, economic and cultural centre within the territory. Because of the favourable conditions in Pautalia, the people worshipped Asclepius, the God of Medicine and Healing. In his honour, the sanctuary “Asclepion“ was built. The Roman baths are a part of this complex and were one of the most impressive buildings back in the days.
