Roman History
Pautalia – the Roman name of Kyustendil – was founded early in the 2^nd century. It was located on an important route through the Balkans and became the administrative, economic and cultural centre within the territory. Because of the favourable conditions in Pautalia, the people worshipped Asclepius, the God of Medicine and Healing. In his honour, the sanctuary “Asclepion“ was built. The Roman baths are a part of this complex and were one of the most impressive buildings back in the days.

Travel in Time
The regional historical museum of Kyustendil might be small but is still very impressive. It disposes of more than 100,000 exhibits that tell the rich past of Kyustendil. You will be surprised to learn how many different ancient civilizations have left their traces in the city! Another major sight is the fortress “Hissarluka”, just outside of the city. It was built at the end of the 4^th century and is one of the most significant fortresses in Bulgaria.
