Serbian Health Resort Vrnjačka Banja is Newest Member of the Roman Thermal Spas of Europe

The European network of spa and wellness destinations of Roman origin welcomes its first Serbian member.

Bonn, 25 April 2018 | The Serbian resort Vrnjačka Banja is the newest member of the destination network Roman Thermal Spas of Europe. At Monday’s festive signing of the member agreement, the mayor of Vrnjačka Banja, Boban Djurovic, emphasized that this is an important step towards Europe for the region. According to him, the goal is to improve the thermal bath’s reputation in Europe and to continuously and innovatively evolve the local attractions through exchange in the European network.

Vrnjačka Banja is Serbia’s most popular resort with some 810.000 overnight stays last year. The town offers both a medical spa facility as well as a modern wellness facility along with several spas in 3- and 4-Star hotels. Another 4-Star hotel is set to open by the end of this year, followed by Serbia’s first 5-Star-Plus hotel next year, both including a hotel spa. Vrnjačka Banja views itself as a holistic health and leisure destination. Besides the spa and wellness offers, the town is characterized by its untouched nature with a large spa garden, sports and entertainment programs for all generations and a rich restaurant and coffee house culture. The Goč-mountains in the region offer winter sports programs and several picturesque Orthodox monasteries, which regularly welcome visitors.

Just like the other member destinations of the Roman Thermal Spas, Vrnjačka Banja has a spa tradition of more than 2000 years. The use of the town’s thermal waters can be traced back to the Roman Age. Today, there are four active thermal springs for the treatment of different symptoms. The Art Nouveau-style buildings and hotels, many of which have been elaborately and accurately restored in recent years, stand testament to the town’s first heyday during the 1920s and 1930s. Today, Vrnjačka Banja is experiencing a renaissance with modern hotel projects and a young generation of engaged hosts and communal politicians who are aiming to transform the town from the most popular destination in Serbia to a European resort town.
